Northampton Town vs Plymouth Argyle - Perfect Time For Cobblers To Turn The Tide

Northampton Town vs Plymouth Argyle - Perfect Time For Cobblers To Turn The Tide

Published by Christoffer Segerhjelm, 2 March 2021

There's plenty of English football to digest this week.
In the Premier League there are seven games scheduled mid-week followed by a full slate of fixtures at the weekend.
In The Championship, League One and League Two there are full slates of fixtures mid-week as well as at the weekend.

I'll be posting quite a few betting previews and tips this week. You can catch them all in my spreadsheet English Football.

In this particular betting tip I'll examine one of the best bets in mid-week - found in the Tuesday evening game between Northampton Town and Plymouth Argyle at Sixfields Stadium in Northampton.

Northampton Town

The Cobblers are indeed rock bottom of the table with 26 points from 31 games. Only two teams have collected fewer points in the five most recent games.
But things haven't looked that bad lately. Northampton have only lost the shots on target count in one of the five most recent games, winning the shots on target count in the four most recent games.
Looking at the four most recent games specifically, Northampton have created on average 5.75 shots on target per game which is second only to high flying Sunderland. In the same stretch of games, Northampton have conceded on average 2.75 shots on target per game which is one of the best defensive numbers in the league in recent weeks. In fact, the East Midlands club have the best shots on target difference in League One right now.

Plymouth Argyle

The Pilgrims look to be on an upward trajectory climbing into the top half of the table: only 6 teams have collected more points in the five most recent games.
However, I believe that they have been quite lucky. Plymouth have actually lost the shots on target count in four of the five most recent games.
Looking at the four most recent games specifically, Plymouth have created on average 4.00 shots on target per game which is below the league average. In the same time span, Plymouth have conceded on average 5.75 shots on target per game which is the worst defensive numbers in the league in recent weeks. In fact, the Devon outfit have one of the worst shots on target difference in League One right now.
