Man Utd vs. Man City – A Crucial Derby for Two Underperforming Teams

Published by Martin Green, 9 December 2020

Both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Pep Guardiola will be desperate to secure victory when their teams clash in the Manchester derby on Saturday.

Solskjaer is now the favourite to be the first Premier League manager sacked this season after his team crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils lost 3-2 to RB Leipzig, but they have been in fine form in the Premier League, having won four games in a row.

That leaves them a point clear of Man City, who have just five wins from 10 matches so far this season. Guardiola will be keen to see his team leapfrog their neighbours and close the gap on the teams above them.

Defensive Improvements

Man City were installed as favourites to win the Premier League this season after shoring up their defence with the arrivals of Ruben Dias and Nathan Aké.

They have made a sluggish start to the campaign, hamstrung by injuries to key forwards like Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus.

Gabriel is now back from injury and he should lead the line in this game, supported by the likes of Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva.

Man City have won their last two Premier League games to nil, and their defensive improvements should please Guardiola.

A Dejected Dressing Room

Man Utd beat Man City home and away last season. Solskjaer has a knack of leading his team to crucial victories when his job is on the line, so it is easy to see why punters are backing Man Utd in this game.

However, they could be demoralised after losing to RB Leipzig in midweek. Their defence has been woeful this season, and Paul Pogba is agitating for a move away from the club, which cannot be good for dressing room morale.

Man City may have a poor recent record against their neighbours, but they have momentum right now, and they have the creativity and guile to unlock the Man Utd defence, so an away win looks like an appealing bet this weekend.
