Borussia Monchengladbach vs. Augsburg: Time for Home Side to Return to Winning Ways

Published by Martin Green, 18 November 2020

Borussia Monchengladbach will aim to climb the Bundesliga table by taking three points against a struggling Augsburg side on Saturday.

Marco Rose’s side were in fine form before suffering a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen last time out.

They won back-to-back league games against Mainz and RB Leipzig, held the mighty Real Madrid to a 2-2 draw and thrashed Shakhtar Donetsk 6-0.

Defeat to Bayer Leverkusen left them seventh in the standings, but they should now return to winning ways against Augsburg, who have struggled defensively in recent weeks.

Borussia-Park is a Fortress

Borussia Monchengladbach boast one of the best home records in the Bundesliga in recent years.

Last season, they won 12 out of 17 games at Borussia-Park, and maintained their strong home form even after fans were prevented from attending games. Only champions Bayern Munich picked up more points at home.

Gladbach have a win and two draws from three home games so far this term. Their last match at Borussia-Park was a 1-0 victory over a very strong RB Leipzig team, so they should feel confident in their ability to beat Augsburg.

There is a very strong spine to this team. Matthias Ginter and Nico Elvevi have formed a solid defensive pairing, and Yann Sommer is a pretty reliable goalkeeper, while Marcus Thuram, Lars Stindl and Alassane Pléa are dangerous in attack.

Gladbach Dominate Head-to-Heads

Augsburg may struggle to deal with that formidable Gladbach attack on Saturday. They lost three out of four games before the international break, and their last games was an underwhelming 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Hertha Berlin.

Gladbach have won their last three games against Augsburg, scoring 10 times in the process, and they should be able to win this one.

They have been rampant in attack and reasonably strong in defence this season, so they should secure another top-four finish, and beating Augsburg would give everyone at the club a significant boost.
