Everton vs. Liverpool – The Most Eagerly Anticipated Merseyside Derby in Years

Published by Martin Green, 15 October 2020

Premier League leaders Everton will host champions Liverpool in an exciting Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park this weekend.

The game will feature two of the most error-prone goalkeepers in the division. The reliable Alisson is out injured for Liverpool, and understudy Adrian has proved calamitous in recent weeks.

His error-strewn display set the tone for Liverpool’s humbling 7-2 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa before the international break. Everton will put him under pressure throughout this game, and it will be difficult for the Reds to keep a clean sheet.

High-Profile Mistakes

The Toffees are top of the table with a 100% record after banging in 12 goals in just four games so far. James Rodriguez has proved to be a magnificent signing, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been a revelation under Carlo Ancelotti’s tutelage.

The only worrying sign for Everton is the form of Jordan Pickford. He continues to make high-profile howlers in the Everton goal, and he may soon find himself ousted from his role as England’s number one.

Liverpool should welcome back Sadio Mané and Thiago Alcantara for this game after both men recovered from Covid-19. The former should help the Reds with their high-pressing game, while the latter will be tasked with controlling the midfield. Captain Jordan Henderson should also return to the starting 11.

A Classic in the Making

Liverpool boast an outrageously dynamic attack - Mohamed Salah in particular has been terrific this season - and they have more than enough quality to carve Everton’s porous defence open in this game.

Everton will be surging with confidence after their magnificent start to the season. Liverpool will be determined to banish the memory of that 7-2 defeat by putting in an eye-catching performance.

It should therefore prove to be an open, entertaining game, with lots of chances at either end of the pitch.

Tip: Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals
