Borussia Monchengladbach vs. Wolfsburg – Can the Hosts Unlock a Tight Defence?

Borussia Monchengladbach will bid to maintain their upward curve when they host Wolfsburg at Borussia-Park on Saturday evening.

Marco Rose’s side began the campaign with an underwhelming 3-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, and then slumped to a 1-1 draw with Union Berlin. However, they returned to form with a 3-1 victory over Koln before the international break, and that should boost their confidence.

Gladbach Dominate at Home

Gladbach finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season after prevailing in a tense battle with Bayer Leverkusen. Their squad is entirely unchanged for the 2020/21 campaign, while several rivals have been weakened, so they should secure another top-four finish.

It finished 3-0 to Gladbach when these teams met at Borussia-Park in June. Winger Jonas Hofmann fired in a first-half brace, and Lars Stindl put the gloss on the scoreline on 65 minutes.

Gladbach also beat Wolfsburg 3-0 at home in the 2018/19 season, so they seem to have the measure of this team when playing at Borussia-Park.

A Disciplined Team

Wolfsburg are undoubtedly a difficult team to place against. They have three draws from three games thus far this season.

They held Bayer Leverkusen to a 0-0 stalemate in their opener, then drew 1-1 away at Freiburg and drew 0-0 with in-form Augsburg.

Olivier Glasner has them well drilled, and they have the joint best defensive record in the Bundesliga. However, they also have the joint worst attacking record.

Wout Weghorst is starved of service, and they play a very conservative brand of football. This should be a low-scoring game between two tough and tenacious sides.

Borussia Monchengladbach should take all three points, and odds of 11/10 (2.10) on the home win look very attractive. You could also play it safe and go for Gladbach-draw double chance, combined with under 3.5 goals to get more value.

Tip: Gladbach-draw double chance and under 3.5 goals
